IMPHAL: The central government decided to rename Mount Harriet in Kalapani, Andaman, and Nicobar Islands, as Mount Manipur, as a fitting homage to Manipur's freedom fighters.

This was announced by Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday while addressing a public rally at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Posting the development on Twitter state Chief Minister N.Biren Singh wrote, "In a fitting tribute to Maharaja Kulachandra & other Manipuri freedom fighters imprisoned at Mt Harriet in Kalapani, Hon’ HM Sh

The central minister said that the Mount Harriet, where Manipur's Maharaja Kulchandra Dhwaj Singh and 22 other freedom fighters were imprisoned, would be renamed Mount Manipur in their honor.

 

Furthermore, the central government has stated that it will support the Manipur government in the construction of a memorial site at Mount Manipur in the Andaman Nicobar Islands.
