Nagaland records highest unemployment rate in NE, second in India

DIMAPUR: Nagaland has the highest unemployment rate among the Northeastern states for two consecutive years between 2017 and 2019 as per recent data.

In the recently concluded Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Union Ministry of Labour & Employment revealed the above data in the house in a written response citing the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

In the year 2017-18, Nagaland’s unemployment rate was 21 per cent and in 2018-19 the rate though reduced to 17 per cent but still remains highest than any other northeastern state.

In the year 2018-19, the unemployment rate was almost double of Tripura, which had the second-highest unemployment rate in the Northeast at 10 per cent.

Overall, Nagaland’s rate was second highest after Lakshadweep at 31.6 per cent.

According to the Ministry, the government has taken a number of initiates for promoting employment generation including Aatmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana (ABRY).
