BHOPAL: Nearly 3,000 doctors resigned from their jobs just hours after the Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered striking junior doctors in the state to return to work within 24 hours, calling the protest "illegal".

The doctors have also stated that they will oppose the high court's decision.

The four-day strike was declared "illegal" by the court.

Dr Arvind Meena, president of the Madhya Pradesh Junior Physicians Association (MPJDA) said almost 3,000 junior doctors working in the state's six government medical institutions resigned on Thursday and presented their resignations to the deans of their various colleges.

He stated that the strike which began on Monday will continue until their demands are fulfilled.

Junior doctors have made a number of demands to the state administration, including a raise in their stipend and free care for themselves and their families if they get the deadly coronavirus.

According to the sources, the state government had already cancelled their enrolment for the third year PG programme and as a result, they would not be able to take the exams.

Junior and senior doctors from Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Bihar, Maharashtra and AIIMS Rishikesh, among others, have supported their protest, Meera added.

"The government has promised to boost the stipend by 24% and the strike will continue until it reaches that level," he stated.
