NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the bridge "Maitri Setu" built over the Feni river between India and Bangladesh, with Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina asserting that political boundaries should not become physical barriers for trade.

Besides that, PM Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones of multiple infrastructure projects in Tripura virtually.

Addressing at the occasion via video-conference, the prime minister said Tripura is undergoing change that has come with the government of "double engine" in the state compared to the previous 30 year government.

"The country is also seeing that where there isn't a double-engine government, you can look around your neighbourhood and see policies empowering the poor, farmers, and daughters either not being implemented or moving at a snail's pace," the prime minister said.

He added that Tripura's dual-engine government has given the state's people more power.

Tripura, which has been held back for years by a "strike culture,"is now working for ease of doing business, Modi said.

In a video message played at the event, Bangladeshi PM Hasina hailed the inauguration of the "Maitri Setu" terming it a "historic moment".

"By providing connectivity to India, we are ushering in a new era in South Asia; we are in a region that has been slow to open up and where regional trade is far below potential; I believe political borders should not become physical barriers to trade," she said.

The 1.9-km-long bridge "Maitri Setu" which joins Sabroom in India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh has been built over the Feni river, which flows between the Indian boundary in Tripura and Bangladesh.
