Nagaland: Massive protest staged in Dimapur demanding immediate implementation of RIIN

KOHIMA: Tribal bodies, civil society organisations, and non-government organisations (NGOs) in Nagaland today took to the streets of Dimapur to protest the delay in implementing the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN).

 

As many as 48 groups, under the banner of the Joint Committee on the Prevention of Illegal immigrants (JCPI), they organised a nonviolent protest rally (JCPI).

 

“The RIIN exercise is a state Government's initiative that the tribal Hohos and Nagaland civil society organisations have embraced and unequivocally declared their support,” said JCPI convenor, Atomi Swu.

 

“The Bano's Commission for RIIN consulted all parts of our society and successfully submitted a detailed report that was corrected and accepted by the Cabinet. However, what people don't understand is that, even after all of the measures have been cleared why the state government can't pass an act to that effect and carry out the RIIN exercise?” said Swu.

He also said that delaying the RIIN's implementation would pose an "enormous threat" to Naga society.

 

“If RIIN isn't enforced, we won't be able to issue ILP, and without ILP, illegal immigrants will invade our state, causing chaos on our social, economic, and political systems,” he said.

 

The groups demanded that the government implement the RIIN as soon as possible, with a cut-off date of December 1, 1963.

“We are confident that the government will not neglect the voice of the people. However, if the government cannot fulfil the demands, we will have to take democratic steps,” said Swu.

 

“We are sure that the government will not ignore the public's voice. However, if the government fails to meet their demands, they will have to take democratic measures,” he added.
