Railway ministry hikes platform ticket price to reduce crowd

NEW DELHI: Indian railway increase the price of platform ticket to prevent overcrowding at railway stations, this was informed by the railway ministry in a notification released today.

 

The ministry terming it as a temporary measure said a temporary price hike of platform tickets is a field operation carried out by a railway administration in the context of passenger safety and preventing overcrowding at stations.

 

It has increased the price of platform tickets from Rs 10 to Rs 30.

 

This has been in practice for several years and is used occasionally as a short-term crowd control measure, stated in the notification.

In light of the recent outbreak of COVID in a few states, the Indian Railway is encouraging people to avoid overcrowding on platforms. During a pandemic, the rush at the platforms must also be regulated. The exercise is solely for the benefit of the public, the notification added.

 

Notably, to prevent people from taking “unnecessary” trips, the ministry had hiked the ticket fares of short-distance passenger trains in February.
