PUNE: Adarsh Poonawalla, chief executive officer (CEO) of Serum Institute of India, today fixed the rates for COVID-19 vaccines for both state governments and private hospitals and made them available for direct procurement.

In a statement today, the state governments can procure Covishield, a vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, at a rate of Rs 400, and the private hospitals can procure it at Rs 600 per dose.

Following the Centre’s vaccination drive, Serum Institute's statement read: "The promising directives will help to scale up vaccine production and allow state governments, private hospitals, and vaccination centers to procure vaccines directly."

Apart from Covishield, one can procure American vaccines at a price of Rs 1500 as well as Russian and Chinese vaccines at a rate of Rs 750 per dose.

Serum Institute will scale up the vaccine production to address the limited capacity and 50 per cent of its capacity will go for the Government of India's vaccination drive while the other 50 per cent will be available for the state governments and private hospitals.

Serum Institute also asserted that the vaccines will be available in retail and free trade after 4-5 months, but for now, it has urged all corporate and private individuals to access through state facilitated and private healthcare systems.

The price for Covishield still stands at Rs 150 for the central government.
