Sikkim: 9 women arrested for burning Bhaichung Bhutia's effigy

GANGTOK: As many as nine women were arrested today by Namchi Police in a case related to burning footballer Bhaichung Bhutia's effigy in Namchi Central Park on June 9.

A case has been lodged against them in Namchi Police Station under case number 18/2021 dated 13.06.2021 under section 188/34 IPC, read with section 51 of Disaster Management Act 2005 for the violation of the law.

Namchi Police have said that the identification of these arrested women, their motives behind making such an irresponsible act during the most dreaded Covid pandemic of the century till now, will be disclosed tomorrow i.e., after the five whole days from when the act was done.

There were 19 women involved in this protest out of which 9 were arrested this morning.

The group of women burnt footballer turned politician and the Humro Sikkim Party leader Bhaichung Bhutia's effigy following his comment on Namchi Hospital Project, which he believed should be stopped immediately and instead existing hospitals should be upgraded focusing the ongoing pandemic.

And as of now, Namchi Police have said that the case is still under investigation.
