Sikkim to decriminalise drug abuse

Gangtok (Sikkim), Aug 9, 2018:

The Sikkim government will soon take steps to change laws that decriminalises use of contraband substance and amend them to enhance punishment for drug peddlers and traffickers.

Chief Minister Pawan Chamling said after the laws were amended, the jail term for drug traffickers and peddlers would be increased, while at the same time consumption of drugs would not be termed an offence.

He added that his government would consider drug users as patients instead of criminals. The government would also take steps to provide treatment to drug users, he added.
