GANGTOK:The Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Union Finance Ministry has set up its first sub-zonal office in Sikkim under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata zonal office-II. The office will start functioning from today in Gangtok.

The Enforcement Directorate is a law enforcement agency and economic intelligence agency responsible for enforcing economic laws and fighting economic crime in India.

The agency enforces the criminal provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the civil sections of the Foreign Exchange Management Act and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act.

The agency which has been operating in the north eastern states through its zonal office located in Guwahati in a statement said that its new office at Bahai School Road, Gangtok will be headed by a Deputy Director rank officer and will have jurisdiction over the entire state of Sikkim.

The agency said the Gangtok office "is expected to significantly improve attachment and confiscation of proceeds of crime under the PMLA and also assist/support the police and other state and central law enforcement agencies in Sikkim to prevent transfer of funds across borders otherwise than through banking channel."
