Shillong, January 10, 2019:

Amid the nationwide unrest against 'illegal' foreigners after the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, suspected Bangladeshi thugs reportedly crossed the Indian border from Rhongkum, West Jaintia Hills, and attacked the Border Security Force (BSF) on the night of January 8.

According to a statement issued by the BSF, a group of 20 to 25 suspected Bangladeshi thugs, armed with daos and other sharp-edged weapons, infiltrated into Indian territory. According to reports, the thugs attacked a BSF personnel, leaving him injured.

Thereafter, the miscreants entered the house of a certain Pratap, a resident of Amdoh village in West Jaintia Hills. Upon seeing the miscreants, Pratap fired at them with his weapon.

However, the miscreants, due to their strength of numbers, were able to overpower Pratap and injure him. Before the BSF party reached the spot, the miscreants had already escaped to Bangladesh. BSF evacuated the injured civilian to PHC in Dawki.

"In view of reports of likely intrusion by Bangladesh miscreants, BSF has intensified its vigil along the International Border to curb any illegal infiltration of Bangladeshi miscreants. One of the miscreants had attacked a personnel with a weapon. In the meanwhile troops from the nearby BSF Border Out Post also rushed to the spot. The miscreants taking advantage of thick foliage, darkness and fog, ran away from there," read an official statement issued by the BSF after the attack.
