CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government today declared a two-week complete lockdown from May 10, due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in the state.

The announcement comes a day after the state recorded 26,465 new Covid-19 cases in the biggest single-day spike so far, pushing the caseload to 13,23,965.

State capital Chennai accounted for 6,738 of the new infections, totaling 3,77,042.

Fatality count also reached a record high at 197, taking the cumulative death toll to 15,171.

State chief minister MK Stalin explained that the decision was taken after a review with district collectors, as well as consultations with medical experts.

The chief minister said there will be a total lockdown from May 10 (4 am) to May 24 (4 am).

However, Banks (with 50% attendance) and ration shops are allowed to operate during the lockdown.

On the other hand, only takeaways will be allowed in the restaurants.

Taxi and auto-rickshaws are also not allowed to operate except for special cases like hospital, wedding and funeral emergency.
