TOKYO: The first case of COVID-19 has been reported in the Tokyo Olympic village, six days before the games begin, confirmed the organisers.

"In the Village, there was only one person who had tested positive for the infection during a screening test", said Masa Takaya, a spokesman for the Tokyo Olympics organising committee.

According to reports, the person has been removed from the village. The village is going to house thousands of athletes and officials throughout the games.

Meanwhile, the organisers also refused to identify the person.

'The person is currently confined to a hotel," said Takaya.

The top organiser of the Tokyo 2020 Games, Seiko Hashimoto, said, "We're doing everything we can to avoid a COVID-19 outbreak. "

If an outbreak occurs, we will ensure that we have a plan in place to deal with it, 'he continued.

The games will take place from July 23 to August 8.

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 , which were postponed by a year due to the global pandemic, are being hosted with few spectators and strict quarantine regulations.
