AGARTALA: A 62-year-old man named Sajal Banik was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court on February 25 for raping a minor two years ago.
The prisoner has also been fined Rs 60,000 by the court on the convict.
According to reports, the accused Sajal Banik, who is a resident of Milan Chakra locality in the city raped a then class VI girl who was a friend of his granddaughter.
The minor was raped when she had come to the residence of the accused.
Banik also threatened the victim of killing her parents if she tells anybody about the incident, hence she kept quiet and did not tell anybody about her ordeal, a police official said.

Her parents came to know about the incident after her mother noticed something unusual, and following that took her for a pregnancy test when the truth came out, adding that police said it was after this that the matter was reported.
The accused was arrested after the case was filed, and a team of doctors terminated the unborn baby as ordered by the court. A DNA test of the accused was then performed, confirming the crime.
After a long trial, special judge V P Debbarma of the West Tripura (Pocso) convicted him under sections 376 (2) and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as Section 6 of the Pocso Act, 2012.
