NEW DELHI: Union Education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has resigned from his post this afternoon citing health issues.

Mr. Pokhriyal's resignation comes just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's major cabinet reshuffle, which is set to take place at 6 pm today.

According to reports, hours before PM Modi's mega reshuffle, six ministers have quit, and more are expected to quit.

On the basis of a comprehensive performance review by the PM and top leaders during the past few weeks, there is speculation that a few more ministers are on their way out.

The minister who have resigned from their posts in the union cabinet is--Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Santosh Gangwar, Sadananda Gowda, Sanjay Dhotre Debashree Chaudhuri, Harsh Vardhan and Ratan Lal Kataria.

Reports suggest that both the education minister and the labour minister have reportedly stated in their resignation letters that they are resigning due to health issues.

Since the NDA won a second term in power in 2019, this would be the first cabinet expansion.

Around 43 ministers are likely to be sworn in today, meanwhile, Modi's cabinet is expected to include ex Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal as well.
