MUMBAI: Veteran actor Dilip Kumar, also known as Bollywood's "tragic king," passed away this morning at 7:30.

The actor was 98.

According to reports, the 98-year-old actor passed away due to prolonged illness.

The death of the veteran actor was also confirmed by the official Twitter account of the actor. It wrote, “With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip Saab, a few minutes ago. We are from God and to Him we return-Faisal Farooqui."

His funeral will be performed at 5 pm in Mumbai.

Dilip Kumar was born to Ayesha Begum and Lala Ghulam Sarwar Khan in the Qissa Khawani Bazaar locality of Peshawar (now Pakistan). He was born pioneer in terms of acting technique, inspiring generations of performers throughout Indian cinema's diverse genres. 

He was considered a master of understatement and avoided the loud and dramatic parts of acting, making him one of India's Golden Age movie icons.

His career spanned five memorable decades, and he is regarded as one of India's best performers.

In 1954, he became the first actor to win the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, and he went on to win it eight times.

Moreover, Dilip Kumar is listed in the Guinness World Records for winning the maximum number of awards by an Indian actor.

In 1994, he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and in 2015, he received the Padma Vibhushan.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the iconic actor starred in number of great films--Mughal-E-Azam, Devdas, Naya Daur, Ganga Jumna, Ram aur Shyam, and other films are among them.
