TURA: The Wangala Festival 2020 has officially begun at Chibragre Wangala Adam 12 kilometers from Tura in West Garo Hills distrioct of Meghalaya on Friday.
The Wangala is a post harvest festival where the Garos give thanks to Misi Saljong (also known as Pattigipa Ra'rongipa), the Sun God, for blessing the people with a rich harvest.
Wangala is celebrated in the months from September to December, with different villages setting different dates for the occasion.
The other name for this festival is the “Hundred Drums Festival.” This festival -- known for its distinctness and good cheer -- has become a tourist attraction for people visiting Meghalaya.

The Garos are said to be a very enthusiastic tribe - and Wangala has become one of their strong identities. Winter is the main harvest season in Meghalaya, and hence the inception of this festival took place there and it has been celebrated ever since.
Earlier, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh had informed that November 12 would be a Local Holiday on account of “Wangala Festival” in the district.
Accordingly, all State Government Offices/ Magisterial Courts/ Educational Institutions of West Garo Hills District will remain closed on the day.
