GUWAHATI: With the country dealing with the second wave of COVID-19, some medical experts have suggested people wear two masks to avoid infection.

The central yesterday released dos and don'ts for double masking.

Dos:

  • A surgical mask and a double or triple layered cloth mask can be used in a double mask.
  • On the nose bridge, the mask should be firmly pressed.
  • It is important to ensure that breathing is not blocked.
  • Wash your cloth mask regularly.

Don'ts:

  • Two masks of the same kind should not be used together.
  • Do not use the same mask for two days in a row.

Wearing two tightly-fitted face masks, according to a study, can nearly double the efficacy of filtering out SARS-CoV-2-sized particles, preventing them from contacting the wearer's nose and mouth and causing COVID-19.

The study, which was published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, found that the explanation for improved filtration isn't so much adding layers of fabric as it is removing any holes or ill-fitting areas of a mask.
