Japan to Invest in Infrastructure Projects of Northeast States

New Delhi, January 23, 2020: 

The Government of India and Japan have announced a slew of investments in the Northeastern states of the country, especially in the areas like forest, sewerage and disaster management.

A delegation led by Japanese Ambassador Satoshi Suzuki called on to Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh on Wednesday. An official statement stated that Japan has decided to invest in the infrastructure projects in the Northeastern region of the country.

The upgradation of Aizwal-Tuipang Section of NH-54 with a length of 372 km is being done with the assistance of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)at a cost of Rs 6,168 crore. This stretch is expected to provide seamless connectivity to Sittwe port in Myanmar as part of the central government's Act East Policy.

The government of Japan will be collaborating with the state governments of Tripura, Sikkim and Nagaland to work in the forest management segment. It may also be mentioned here that the country will soon join with Meghalaya in the area of forest management.

During the meeting, various other issues related to mutual collaboration and cooperation between the two countries in areas of bamboo, disaster management, road infrastructure and Guwahati sewerage project were discussed.

DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh said that India shares traditional relations with Japan and under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, new areas of mutual collaboration are being added to it. He also said that during the last five years, Japan's engagement in India's infrastructure projects has increased.
