LA: Twitter has launched a new feature on Tuesday called ‘Fleets’: tweets that will disappear after 24 hours. The concept is quite similar to the story feature on FaceBook and Instagram. The feature was previously tested in Italy, India, and South Korea.
On Tuesday, Twitter informed, “People have reported feeling a tweet is too final and wanted some flexibility in what they post and the duration that post stays up.”
“Some of you tell us that tweeting is uncomfortable because it feels so public, so permanent, and like there’s so much pressure to rack up retweets and likes,” Twitter’s design director, Joshua Harris, and product manager, Sam Haveson, wrote in a blog post.

“Because they disappear from view after a day, fleets helped people feel more comfort able sharing personal and casual thoughts, opinions, and feelings.”
Twitter while launching the new feature wrote, “That thing you didn’t Tweet but wanted to but didn’t but got so close but then were like nah. We have a place for that now—Fleets! Rolling out to everyone starting today.”
The ‘Fleets’ appear at the topmost of the app in bubbles with the icon of the user posting that very post. Once posted, they stay for the next 24 hours and then expire so people can no longer view or access them.
Just like Instagram, users are allowed to send direct messages from a Fleet post. The whole concept is similar to the one that has been used by apps like Snapchat and Instagram -- which was later adopted by FaceBook.
