Womenfolk in Imphal, Manipur blocked roads and obstructed vehicles from heading towards Union Home Minister Amit Shah's programme today, April 15.
Women groups burnt tyres and blocked roads so as to prevent the vehicles and people from attending Amit Shah's election campaign programme.
Ahead of Amit Shah's visit, some protestors staged agitations in parts of Imphal West and Imphal East, expressing their disapproval. At around 1 pm, protestors in the Lamlong area of Imphal East District checked vehicles to prevent people from attending a BJP election public gathering at Hapta Kangjeibung. A protest was also held in New Checkon in the Imphal East district where roads were blocked and tyres were set on fire.
However, security personnel were able to control the situation and no untoward incidents were reported. One protestor expressed that Amit Shah's visit was disheartening rather than a cause for celebration. The protestor stated that the state has been suffering due to an ongoing crisis for over 11 months, and instead of bringing an amicable solution, Shah's visit to the state at the time of the election is condemnable.
The protestor added that there was no reason to welcome Shah's visit as it was perceived to be for election purposes and not to address the present crisis.
Though some sections of people oppose his visit but thousands of people turn up to attend the public meeting. Some women also line up or stand at road side to welcome.
