ASSAMESE DRAMA FILM OTHELLO SCREENED AT JYOTI CHITRABAN

We too have our Othello.

Othello is an Assamese drama film directed by Hemanta Kumar Das. The film is screened today at Jyoti Chitraban in Guwahati with the initiative of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film And Television Institute (DBHRGFTI). The film stars Jupitora Bhuyan and Arup Baishya. Unlike what the title suggests, the film is not an adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous play. The film showcases a few urban, lonely individuals lost in a hazy maze of politics, terrorism, love and hate.

It follows five individuals, a 72 year old ex-revolutionary Bankim Bhatta suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, Pabitri who is a 62 years old widow of Bhatta’s former comrade, Mun who owns an auto rickshaw called Othello, Tina a tenant at Bankim’s place and young boy Ganesh who runs a makeshift tea stall which connected with a bomb blast. Othello has won the award for best screenplay in the Indian Cine Film Festival 2014 held in Mumbai.
