Guwahati, December 30, 2019:

Legendary Bollywood actor, Amitabh Bachchan was conferred with the prestigious 'Dadasaheb Phalke Award' on Sunday by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Hindi cinema veteran was awarded Indian cinema’s highest honour during a special ceremony hosted by the President.

The 77-year old actor attended the ceremony with his wife, veteran actor and MP Jaya Bachchan and son, actor Abhisekh Bachchan.

Earlier, Bachchan was supposed to receive this honour at the National Film Award ceremony last Monday, but due to ill health, he was unable to attend the event.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award prestigious honour was named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, revered as the Father of Indian Cinema, instituted in 1969. The award comprises of a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000.

Bachchan, popularly known as Big-B began his cinema journey as a voice-over artist in the Bengali film Bhuvan Shome but he made his debut in the Bollywood with Saat Hindustani.

Big-B’s portrayal of Inspector Vijay Khanna in Prakash Mehra’s Zanjeer (1973) was his big-break in the true sense and gradually he became a household name and rose to superstardom.

Besides his persona as the 'Angry Young Man' in films such as Deewar, Sholay, Shakti among others, Bachchan also experimented with comedy and delivered some great hits like Namak Halal, Amar Akbar Anthony, Satte Pe Satta.

In 1990, Amitabh Bachchan earned his first National Film Award for his iconic role of gangster Vijay Deenanath Chauhan in Agneepath. He went on to win three more Best Actor National Film Awards with films like Black, Paa and Piku. These three films till-date have remained as the best highlights in his spanning career of five decades.

In 2000, Bachchan made his television debut as the host of the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian adaptation of the British television game show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
