Doordarshan Celebrates 60 Years of Bringing Television to India

New Delhi, September 15, 2019:

We all probably remember the orb-like logo of Doordarshan (or 'DD') from our childhood days before the advent of cable television and set top boxes. Today, the state-run network, which has entertained several general general, celebrates sixty years of existence.

Nostalgia has gripped the nation as the oldest television broadcaster hits the 'magical mark' of 60. In the days of entertainment, when Doordorshan was the only television channel, entertainment in the country revolved around serials such as MahabharataFauji and Malgudi Days.

Commemorating the occasion, Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati said, "It’s a moment to recognise that it’s not that Doordarshan has gotten older, but it is getting newer for digital audiences."

"Doordarshan is in the DNA of India. Happy Birthday Doordarshan. 60 Glorious Years of DD. May you continue to enthral generations of Indians", said Doordarshan Director General Supriya Sahu.

Doordarshan, which began as an experiment on September 15, 1959, became a service in 1965. On April 1, 1976, Doordarshan transited to become a separate department in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Earlier, it was a part of the All India Radio (AIR).

It may be mentioned here that Doordarshan was instrumental in launching the career of Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan, who launched into superstardom after his career-changing turn in beloved tv serial 'Fauji'.
