Yesterday, a press conference was held in Mumbai to give a head-start to the 65th edition of the awards this year. The press conference, attended by Bollywood diva Vidya Balan, also offered a glimpse of the awesome Assam.
Meanwhile, several prominent artists and intellectuals of Assamese society have decided to boycott the awards, citing the unrest over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act as the reason.
Manjit Mahanta, senior journalist and noted intellectual, told the media that the “corporate” Filmfare awards should not be held in Assam due to sensitivity of the period. “At a time when the entire Assamese community is up-in-arms against the CAA, I do not think that the Filmfare award should be held here.”
Actor Ravi Sarma, who resigned from the BJP party due to differences over the Citizenship Amendment Act, supporting the boycott, said, ” I think this is not the right environment for a film event to happen in Assam. We are on the boil…and only recently, we saw five corpses (of the martyrs of the anti-CAA movement in Assam.”
