Gauhati University to Host Northeast Film Extravaganza, 'Jonaki'

Guwahati, February 26, 2020:

The department of communication and journalism, Gauhati University, is going to organize a film festival named Jonaki for the second time on 28^th-29^th February at Phanidhar Dutta Memorial Hall and AT Hall in the University premises.

The aim of this film festival is to promote a rich plethora of ethnic language films from Northeast among the student fraternity and promote the diverse cinematic talents from the Northeast Indian region.

The film festival will also provide a roadmap for aspiring film makers to make films in the region for it’s people. This year, the organizers have zeroed in on a batch of successful films from NE India to enthrall audiences. The films include Aamis, Bornodi Bhotiai, Mishing, Calender, Kanneen etc.

It may be mentioned here that the Northeastern films like Mishing and Bulbul Can Sing have already made their mark in the national arena and have been endowed with several awards.

The first film to win a national award from Tripura, Yarwng, will also be screened in this film festival. To enhance the knowledge of the students regarding cinema and to encourage them for the same we have also designed a Workshop , Cine Quiz (competition) as well as a short film competition.According to the chief coordinator of the film festival committee, it  has received films from beyond the North-Eastern borders,which shows that Jonaki is transcending the boundaries of North-East.

It is to be mentioned  that the department of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University was established on 1967 and Jonaki was organized for the first time in 2018 and thirteen acclaimed films were screened at the event.

Jonaki is not merely a film festival but also a pragmatic approach to enrich the cinema culture amongst the people so that we develop a taste of art and culture in our own unique way.
