Bangladesh Commerce Minister Requests India to Lift Ban on Onion Exports

Guwahati, October 23, 2019:

Bangladesh Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Tuesday urged the Indian government to lift its ban on onion exports during his address at the two-day India-Bangladesh Stakeholders’ Meet held in Assam’s Guwahati.

India had recently banned the export of onion to increase the availability of the commodity in the domestic market.

Bangladesh’s minister said that the country lacks six lakh tonnes of onion and almost 80 percent of onions are supplied from India.

It may be mentioned here that during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India, she had requested her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, to lift the ban.

Tipu Munshi during his address also mentioned that he spoke to his Indian counterpart Piyush Goyal on the issue and had been assured that the Government will take necessary steps in this regard after Maharashtra elections.

He also added India is the second-largest trading partner of Bangladesh, next to China.

The total trade between India and Bangladesh had reported an increase of USD 8.9 billion in 2018-19 to that of USD 5.08 billion in 2010-11.
