COVID-19 Update: 1,141,425 People Infected Worldwide, Death Toll Crosses 60,000

New Delhi, April 4, 2020: 

COVID-19 cases across the world has infected a total of 1,141,425 people. 61, 205 people have died due to the virus as fresh cases continue to emerge worldwide.

Spain has recorded the highest number of new cases of COVID-19 worldwide with as many as 5,537 people infected with the virus as on Saturday.

According to the latest trend on Worldometers, the country's total fatalities stand at 11, 744. However, although the numbers are high, the rate at which the developments are taking place is said to have slowed down.

Spain's Health Ministry said that this represented a 7 per cent increase in total deaths after a 9 per cent rise on Friday, which is less than half the pace of the around 20 per cent increase registered a week ago.

A total of 809 people died from the disease over the past 24 hours, down from Friday's 932 and Thursday's daily record of 950, the figures showed.

Meanwhile, the total number of registered infections rose to 124,736 on Saturday from 117,710 on Friday, when Spain overtook Italy in the total number of infections for the first time.

Madrid's some of the famous tourist spots like the Royal Palace and Las Ventas bullring witnessed silence as Spaniards prepared themselves for another round of the strict lockdowns. Only employees in essential sectors such as health are free to travel for work. Restaurants, bars and shops are shut, and social gatherings are also banned.

The USA still reigns with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world - 278, 496. 1,335 new cases and 39 new deaths were recorded. USA's death toll has crossed the 7000-mark.

Its unemployment numbers have grown at an alarming rate. Bars, restaurants and hotels have been forced to close, leaving many facing an uncertain future. Retailers too are reportedly seeing dramatic changes as they are forced to lay off staff.

Italy currently has 119, 827 cases of COVID-19. With zero new deaths and cases, it can be said that the pace of both has flattened out over the past days, even as the containment measures shuttering all the non-essential activities and banning most movement has takes a heavy toll on the economy.

China is gradually seeing a decline in all the figures. The country, wherein the virus originally emerged from now has 81,639 cases with just 19 new cases and 4 deaths.

Meanwhile, the number of active COVID-19 cases stands at 2,650, while 183 people have either recovered or discharged. 68 deaths have been reported so far and one has migrated according to the Ministry of Health & Welfare.

As per the ministry’s updated data on coronavirus cases, six fresh deaths were reported – three from Maharahtra, two from Delhi and one from Gujarat on Saturday.

Maharashtra has reported the most deaths (19) so far, followed by Gujarat (9), Telengana (7), Madhya Pradesh (6), Delhi (6), Punjab (5), Karnataka (3), West Bengal (3), Jammu and Kashmir (2), Uttar Pradesh (2) and Kerala (2). Andhra Pradesh,Tamil Nadu, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh have reported a death each.

The highest number of confirmed cases of the pandemic was reported from Maharashtra at 423 followed by Tamil Nadu with 411 infections. The number of cases in Delhi has gone up to 386, in Kerala to 295, in Rajasthan to 179 and in Uttar Pradesh to 174. In Andhra Pradesh, cases have increased to 161, while Telengana has registered 158 positive patients so far.

Karnataka has 128 cases. Madhya Pradesh has reported 104 cases so far, Gujarat 95, while Jammu and Kashmir has 75 positive patients so far. The number of cases has risen to 63 in West Bengal. Punjab has reported 53 cases of COVID-19 so far followed by Haryana with 49 cases.

Bihar has 29, Assam has 25, Chandigarh 18, Uttarakhand 16 and Ladakh has reported 14 cases so far. Ten cases have been reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Chhattisgarh has nine positive patients so far. Goa and Himachal Pradesh have have reported six coronavirus cases each. Odisha and Puducherry have five cases each.

Jhakhand and Manipur have reported two cases each while Mizoram and Arunachal Pradeh have reported a case each.
