Dhaka’s Anti-Terrorism Tribunal to Pronounce Verdict on ‘Cafe Attack’ on November 27

Dhaka, November 18, 2019:

Bangladesh is all set to give out the verdict in the 2016 Holey Artisan cafe attack case that killed 22 people, including foreign nationals.

Reportedly, Dhaka’s Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal Judge Mohammad Mojibur Rahman set the date after hearing the arguments of the state and the defence in the case.

The development took place after the eight defendants in the case pleaded not guilty to the charges related to the bloodshed that took place on July 1, 2016.

According to reports, five armed men laid siege to the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka for 12 hours, killing 22, including nine Italians and seven Japanese nationals and taking dozens of hostages.

The responsibility of the incident was claimed by the Islamic State, however, according to the Bangladesh government, the attack was masterminded by the jihadi group Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

As on October 27, the court completed recording testaments of 113 witnesses in relation to the cafe attack.

As many as 21 were under suspicion of the attack out of which 13 have been killed in raids at different times and the eight remaining accused are behind bars, said reports.
