A large fire broke out in the wee hours of Tuesday morning at the Cathedral of Notre Dame, which is one of the most historically significant cathedrals in the world. The cathedral, whose name means ‘Our Lady’, is the seat of the archbishop in Paris.
The extensive fire caused its delicate spire to collapse and thousands of onlookers looked on in dismay from the banks of the Seine river as the skies of Paris city filled up with smoke. It has been reported that many of the onlookers even shed tears in grief as the beautiful monument was ravaged by the fire.
It took 500 firefighters nearly five hours to bring the situation under control. Fire Chief Jean-Claude Gallet said that the two towers above the Paris skyline had been spared, but two-thirds of the roof was destroyed.
It may be mentioned that the fire began in the interior network of wooden beams, many dating back to the middle ages.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has promised that the historic structure will be revived. Moreover, French billionaires and companies pledge $450 million to rebuild the Notre Dame cathedral.
