Waters pointed to protests in various parts of the world, including India, as proof that there is a global movement. "Julian is why we are here today, but this is no parochial protest. We are today part of a global movement, a global movement that might be the beginning of the global enlightenment that this fragile planet so desperately needs", Waters said.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 was passed by the Parliament of India on 11 December 2019. It amended the Citizenship Act of 1955 by providing a path to Indian citizenship for illegal migrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The amendment of the Act, that was criticized for its exclusion of Muslims, sparked protests across India -- first in the Northeast Indian states, and then in the other parts of the country.
