Princess Maria Teresa of Spain Becomes First Royal to Die of Coronavirus

New Delhi, March 29, 2020:

Princess Maria Teresa of Spain has become the first Royal to have died of the coronavirus or COVID-19, her younger brother Prince Sixtus Henry of Bourbon-Parma, announced.

She was 86-year-old and was the Princess of the Bourbon-Parma Royal Family in Spain and King of Spain Felipe VI’s cousin.

She was a Professor at Paris’ Sorbonne, as well as a Professor of Sociology at Madrid’s Complutense University. The royal was also a longtime advocate of women’s rights and socialist ideas.

She was born in Paris, France on July 28, 1933 to parents, Prince Xavier and Madeleine de Bourbon, who had a total of six children.

Princess Maria did not have any children of her own. But she is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including Prince Carlos of Bourbon-Parma, Duke of Parma and Piacenza, Princess Margarita and Prince Jaime.

This comes at a time when Spain registered a record number of coronavirus deaths in a single-day period with the army now being handed emergency powers to transfer bodies because undertakers are unable to cope. The number of deaths from COVID-19 has reached 5,982 since the outbreak began. Spain has recorded a total of 73,235.

It may be mentioned here that Prince Charles, 71, also reported to have a 'mild' form of the illness. United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson also tested POSITIVE for the dreaded Coronavirus (or COVID-19), joining the long list of high-profile people who have been infected so far.

Internationally, 30,888 deaths have been reported till date due to the coronavirus, with a large chunk of those being reported from Italy (10,023). In all, 664,248 people have been infected by the virus till now, with 142,366 having recovered. Somewhat gravely, 25,207 are said to be in a “serious” condition.
