Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday was honoured with the ‘Order of Zayed’, the highest civilian award given by the UAE, as a mark of appreciation for his 'efforts to boost bilateral ties between the two nations'.
The 'Order of Zayed' had earlier conferred the award to other world leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Queen Elizabeth II, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement, "The award in the name of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, acquires special significance as it was awarded to Prime Minister Modi in the year of the birth centenary of Sheikh Zayed."
The UAE had announced that the award would be conferred on Modi in April. In a tweet in April, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, had said, “We have historical and comprehensive strategic ties with India, reinforced by the pivotal role of my dear friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who gave these relations a big boost.”
It is to be mentioned that the award has been conferred at a time when Pakistan, a close ally of the UAE, has gone on an all out offensive against India after the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special privileges to citizens of Jammu and Kashmir.
