UN Rights Chief Expresses Concern over Kashmir Issue and Assam NRC

New Delhi, September 9, 2019:

The United Nation (UN) rights Chief Michelle Bachelet on Monday voiced alarm over the situation in India-administered Kashmir and India's controversial National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

Expressing deep concern, Michelle Bachelet stated that the recent actions by the government of India have made an impact on the human rights of Kashmiris.

Bachelet also mentioned about the restrictions on internet communications and peaceful assembly and the detention of local political leaders and activists.

Bachelet also voiced concern over India’s controversial citizenship register, NRC in Assam. The Human Right fear that NRC may turn up into a cover for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to eliminate the Muslims.

Bachelet has also expressed that NRC has caused great uncertainty and anxiety and the people as it excluded 19 lakh people from it.

The UN rights chief also appealed the government to ensure due process during the appeals process, prevent deportation or detention, and ensure people are protected from statelessness.
