NEW DELHI: After the angry supporters of President Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in a last stand for the outgoing president, the United States has tallied its deadliest day of the coronavirus pandemic for the second straight day.

The United Stated recorded nearly 4,000 COVID-19 deaths on Thursday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

US recorded 3,998 COVID deaths in the last 24 hours and 265,246 new cases of Coronavirus, according to the university. More than 132,000 people are battling covid-19 in hospital beds, the most the nation’s health-care system has taken on.

Meanwhile, The tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan reported its first COVID-19 death some 10 months after initially detecting the virus and managing to keep the disease under control by largely sealing off the tourism-dependent country.

In a statement issued late on Thursday, Bhutan's health ministry said a 34-year-old man with chronic liver disease and renal failure, who tested positive for COVID-19, had died at a hospital in the capital Thimphu.

Bhutan has reported 767 cases of the coronavirus, having conducted a little over 300,000 tests since it detected the first infection in an American tourist last March.

The number of active cases stood at 2,25,449. After a marginal rise on Thursday, the active cases declined by 2,634, according to health ministry update at 8 am.

The disease claimed 234 lives in the last 24 hours, which pushed the death toll to 1,50,570.
