Guwahati, July 17, 2019:

The local residents of the 'Deepor Beel' have continued to raise their voices against the construction of the double-track railway line through the wetland.

The locals of the Deepor Beel have a serious concern about the double-track railway as the 'Beel' is a habitat to scores of birds and wild animals which are a part of the ecosystem.

The department of the forest has identified four elephant corridors have been disrupted by the existing railway track, thus, the locals believe that the second railway track will worsen the situation. This is what the locals have been trying to convey to the Central and the state government authorities through memorandums at different points of time.

The locals have also made allegations that neither the government authorities nor the Northeast Frontier Railway has been responding to their demand.

As per the latest updates, the NF Railway has already initiated construction of the second railway track near in Azara and surveys are being carried out there from time-to-time.
