‘Bandhs’ cast shadow over Manipur and Nagaland as CAB nears Rajya Sabha

Guwahati, February 11, 2019:

The streets in the Northeastern states of Nagaland and Manipur wear a deserted look today as ‘bandhs’ have been called in both states to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. A 10-hour ‘bandh’ has been called in Nagaland whereas a 36-hour total shutdown has been called in Manipur.

In Nagaland, the ‘bandh’ has been called by Naga Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) under the banner of Nagaland Gaon Burhas Federation. The ‘bandh’ started in the morning at 6 am and shall last up to 4 pm today.

It is to be mentioned that police, district administration, medical and emergency services, army and paramilitary forces, students and teachers on examination, pre-engaged programs like weddings, autorickshaws or transportations ferrying students on examination, train and flight passengers as well as the NSCN-IM attending the National Hoho are exempted from the purview of the ‘bandh’.

The ‘bandh’ in Manipur has been called by the conglomerate of civil societies People’s Association Manipur and started at 5 am today.

Meanwhile, Manipur People against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (MANPAC) 2016 convenor Yumnamcha Dilipkumar has also announced a new series of protests against the Bill. Black flag protests will be held today and all vehicles will be stopped on Tuesday.
