IMPHAL: Turmoil in the Indian National Congress party does not seem to settle down as the president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) as well as a six-time legislator from Bishnupur, Govindas Konthoujam, has resigned from his post today.

As speculations arose of him joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, the central leadership is rushing to the poll bound state.

As per MPCC spokesman Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, INC president Sonia Gandhi has sent Manipur in-charge and former Union Minister Bhakta Charan Das who would arrive in the state capital tomorrow at 9 am to meet the senior leaders of the party.

"There are some recent developments in the party and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has acknowledged the matter immediately. As for now, the president has only tendered his resignation. We cannot say about him joining other parties," said Meitei talking to InsideNE.

Konthoujam, former Cabinet minister, was appointed as the president of MPCC last December by Sonia Gandhi herself.

If sources are to be believed then as many as eight Congress MLAs are ready to don the saffron robe with Konthoujam.

Northeast which used to be a Congress fortress once is now eating the dust due to BJP. The Congress has lost its two prominent faces in Assam -- Ajanta Neog and Rupjyoti Kurmi -- to BJP in less than a span of six months and another Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain is ready to migrate as well just after two months of winning the election from Thowra constituency for the second consecutive term.
