Imphal Airport to Get Rs 725 Crore Facelift

Imphal, June 2, 2019:

The work that is required to develop the Imphal airport to the level of an 'international airport' will begin from October 2 this year. The major facelift is expected to be completed within 3 years.

Disclosing this during a press conference held on Saturday at the Imphal airport, Airport Authority of India regional executive director (Northeast region) Sanjeep Jindal said that a regional review meeting on issues and inconveniences currently faced at Imphal airport and to develop the airport to international level was held recently.

Apart from this, issues relating to Imphal airport were discussed with the state chief secretary after holding meetings and requisite ground surveys for infrastructure development at the airport has been completed and all related works would begin from October 2 this year.

According to Sanjeep Jindal, Rs 725 crore will be invested for infrastructure development at Imphal airport for making it at par with other international airports.

The design of the project is being undertaken by M/s GMB Architects of Australia, while Kochi based M/s Kitco Limited is the lead consultant and M/s Sthapati Associates sub-consultant for interior-landscape-fastcade-airport system.

The project got approval on December 2, 2018 while concept design and preliminary drawing of the project conducted after site survey and soil investigation was approved on April 8 this year, he added.

Sanjeep Jindal also assured that there will be no impact on surrounding people, environment and resources while taking up infrastructure development at Imphal airport and around 2.2 mw of electricity required for taking up the project will also be tapped from solar using modern technology.

Both interior and exterior designs of the new Imphal airport to be developed at international level will be based on the culture and traditions of the people of the state and the design will showcase rich flora and fauna of the state.

Sanjeep Jindal also said that currently, the Imphal airport is providing employment to around 1,000 people, but the new airport would be five times bigger than the current one and provide jobs to around 4,000 more people.

Immediately after completion of the new airport and its commissioning, the existing airport will be used as skill development training centre, he added.
