Manipur: 30 Injured in Clash Between Protesters and Police in Imphal

Imphal, August 11, 2019:

As many as 30 student protesters, mostly boys, have been injured, while two of them were seriously injured after police resorted to firing tear gas, smoke bombs, and mob bombs to control irate protesters at different locations in Imphal city on Saturday.

They were protesting in demand of justice in Babysana's mysterious death case.

Students took to the streets and protested holding placards with slogans like- 'We strongly condemn the current Government', 'Bring the truth at the earliest' and 'No justice, no compromise to the mysterious death of N Babysana”.

23 days of mass agitations passed following the mysterious death of the schoolgirl on July 18.

The police actions were launched in and around campuses of the educational institutes at the Imphal College, TG Higher Secondary School, Ananda Singh Higher Secondary School, CC Higher Secondary school, DM College, Imphal, Manipur College, Imphal. And more importantly, there were also confrontations between police on one side and students and women vendors of Ima market at Imphal city on the other. In all, over 30 persons mostly students including two girls sustained injuries in the police actions. The injuries were rushed to the hospitals at RIMS, JNIMS and Shija Clinics, Imphal.

Altogether 17 JAC members are in judicial custody and five persons including school Principal Ph Landhoni are also in judicial custody in connection with Babysana murder case.

The agitation has been spearheaded by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the mysterious death of Ninthoujam Babysana Chanu whose lifeless body was found inside her hostel at the Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, Imphal on July 18.
