SRINAGAR: Christian missionary Chunglenlal Singsit from Manipur, who has threatened to chant the Hindu slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’, has alleged that he was picked up by police and beaten in custody after the incident.

Singsit, who says he hails from Manipur in the Northeast, told The Wire that the incident happened around 3 pm on Christmas (December 25) when he had gone to a believer’s house in Kathua to pray.

When he went to the market to buy gifts for his children, he says two men stopped him and began accusing him of converting the family he had visited that day and forced him to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’.”

Soon, he said, a crowd of 100 people had gathered, and while some of whom threatened to beat him for religious conversion, three men slapped me a few times.

He has said that he "could barely speak out of fear” as they continued to pester him to say 'Jai Shri Ram.'

They also called the local police and accused me of carrying out religious conversion in the area. Although he denied trying to convert anyone, the police picked him up and kept him in lock up for more than 24 hours, during which they beat him and shouted abuses, he says.
