Manipur’s Maisnam Meiraba Luwang To Participate In Asian Junior Championship In China

One of the rising stars in India’s badminton galaxy, Maisnam Meiraba Luwang (16) of Manipur, once again showed his talent when he won U-19 singles title at the White Night Russian Junior International Badminton 2019 tournament at St. Petersburg in Russia on Sunday night.

Manipur Chief Minister, N Biren Singh on Monday in a message said that he is indeed happy to learn that Maisnam Meiraba Luwang has clinched the title of the U-19 singles competition at the White Night Russian Junior International Tournament at St. Petersburg, Russian on Sunday.

MM Luwang’s father, M Romesh Luwang, who himself is a badminton coach disclosed that his son is getting ready for yet another international tournament in China in the third week of his month. The young lad from Imphal’s Khwairakpam Leikai got his first taste of the game at the age of eight years. Romesh discovered the talent of his son while playing badminton at the family’s lawn with neighbours.

The CM, on behalf of the government of Manipur and people of the state, has extended hearty congratulations to Meiraba Luwang for making the country proud by winning the prestigious championship.

With this grand achievement, Meiraba Luwang has once again proved that Manipur, though a small state, has huge potential in sports and is indeed the sporting capital of India, Manipur is proud of his accomplishments.

The Chief Minister extended his best wishes to Meiraba Luwang for the forthcoming Asian Junior championship to be held in Suzhou, China from July 20 to 28. The CM said he is hopeful that the young and dynamic badminton play would bring more laurels to the state. He also conveys his best wishes for his further endeavours.

Organized by the National Badminton Federation of Russia under BWF/Badminton Europe, the number 3 seed Meiraba lifted his first under-19 singles title after he knocked out Pune (Maharashtra) shutter Varun Kapur by 21-5; 21-9 in the final of the tournament.

This year, Meiraba grabbed the U-19 boys’ singles title at the Yonex Sunrise All India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament, held in Chennai. He also won a bronze medal in the U-19 boys’ singles event at the BWF/Asia Badminton Yonex-Roza Bty Junior International Challenge held at Bangkok in Thailand recently.
