Guwahati, April 14, 2019:

As Assam celebrates the Rongali festival Bihu, Christians in the NorthEastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura are celebrating Palm Sunday with pomp and splendor.

It may be mentioned that Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four canonical Gospels.

Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1–9) when palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent.

A large number of devotees attended the church prayer services on Palm Sunday across the NorthEast and prayed for universal peace and prosperity.

It may be mentioned that over 5.3 million Christians live in Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Manipur, while there are some Christians in the other NorthEastern states.
