Imphal, December 29, 2019:

At a time when the country is gripped with concerns over the amended Citizenship Act, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced that if the act violated Article 14 of the Constitution, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is ready to accept defeat.

He said that if there is a paragraph or a clause in the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), which violates Article 14, i.e. equality before law, then the state BJP government will be ready for defeat.

While addressing a gathering at Basu ground in Manipur’s Thoubal district, N Biren Singh termed the claim that the CAA violated the said Article is “bogus”. He accused the leftist groups of attempting to incite unrest in the country.

It may be stated here that Article 14 of the Constitution allows for equality before law or equal protection of the laws within the territory of India. It states that the State shall not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws within the territory of India.

The CM urged the gathering to focus on encouraging work culture rather than “wasting time” in any form of protests against the CAA. He asked the people to have faith on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s commitment to the country.

It may be mentioned here that the Manipur BJP, led by N Biren Singh will be organizing a massive rally on Sunday in support of the CAA. The leader, during his speech in Thoubal, also said that there was no need of further debate on the CAA.
