Manipur: Thousands bid farewell to Kuki-Zo political leader Thangminlen Kipgen

In an outpouring of grief, thousands gathered to mourn the demise of Thangminlen Kipgen, a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kangpokpi Assembly Constituency and a former minister of Manipur. 

The 71-year-old veteran politician and ex-President of the National People’s Party (NPP) passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer at his native village, Haipi, in Kangpokpi District.

Kipgen, a prominent leader among the Kuki-Zo people, dedicated decades to public service, championing the rights and development of tribal communities. His demise marks the end of an era for his followers and admirers, who describe him as a pillar of leadership and an advocate for peace and unity.

The sorrow of his passing resonated deeply across the Sadar Hills, with thousands congregating at his residence in Haipi Village to pay their final respects. A condolence ceremony was held throughout the night and the following day, reflecting the deep admiration and love he commanded among his people. 

Kipgen was laid to rest with full honours at the Haipi Village cemetery, where mourners gathered to bid farewell to a leader who left an indelible mark on Manipur’s political and social landscape.

Born on July 7, 1953, in Haipi Village, Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi District, Thangminlen Kipgen had an illustrious political career spanning from 1995 to 2011. During this period, he held several significant positions in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, representing the Kangpokpi Assembly Constituency for four consecutive terms.

He made his maiden entry into the 6th Manipur Legislative Assembly in 1995 on a Manipur People's Party (MPP) ticket and served as the Minister of Power in 1998. Over the years, he was re-elected multiple times, representing various political parties, including the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Federal Party of Manipur (FPM), and the National People’s Party (NPP). Kipgen held key positions, such as the Minister for Horticulture and Soil Conservation and Chairman of the Hill Areas Committee, during his tenure.

As a former President of the National People’s Party (NPP) and Chief of Haipi Village, Kipgen was recognized for his dedication to improving education and promoting youth welfare in the region. He actively supported initiatives like awarding scholarships to meritorious students and facilitating youth empowerment programs. His tenure also focused on enhancing local infrastructure, such as roads and community facilities, to improve connectivity and the standard of living in Kangpokpi.

Additionally, Kipgen was a consistent advocate for addressing social issues, including drug abuse, through awareness campaigns. His leadership emphasized harmony and development in Kangpokpi, earning him respect not only within his constituency but also across the state and nation.

Throughout his career, Kipgen remained actively involved in addressing developmental and welfare issues, leaving a lasting impact on Manipur’s political landscape.

His legacy as a leader, community advocate, and family man will continue to inspire generations to come.
