CM Sangma urges Mawlai's village headmen to aid in peace-keeping efforts

MAWLAI: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma today met MDC from Mawlai Teiborlang Pathawand 9 Rangbah Shnong (Headmen) from Malwlai to discuss a spate of issues in the wake of the vandalism and arson that erupted yesterday against the encounter of former Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) General Secretary Cheristerfield Thangkhiew on August 13.
"First and foremost, they mentioned about the recent that incident took place," Sangma said in a video release, adding that he has informed them of the government's okaying of a judicial probe to investigate the matter.
Sangma further added that he has appealed to the local leaders to ensure that peace is restored in the Mawlai area and Shillong city as a whole.
"I am happy that the and the MC have responded very positively and they have told us they will do everything in their capacity to mobilize people and inform them and ensure that no further incidents take place," Sangma said.

Sangma also informed that a discussion had taken place about a CRPF camp on a plot of land belonging to the Art and Craft department during the crucial meet that also featured Sangma's deputy Prestone Tynsong.

"I had a quick conversation with the IG of the CRPF and the IG expressed said that if the Government can give an alternative location and give a permanent site to the CRPF they would be willing to shift to that new location," said Sangma, adding that it would be a "win-win" situation to both sides.
Sangma also said that they have proposed the setting up of youth-centric centers to benefit the youth of the region on the plot of land where the camp is currently located.
Sangma also said that he has given an assurance to the committee to begin the procedure to shift the CRPF camp from the Mawlai site "to a permanent location which would be in the interest of the CRPF as well as the residents of Mawlai."
