Human rights panel orders probe into labour deaths

Following media reports of death of five persons due to electrocution near Manikganj village of North Garo Hills district, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.

According to the commission, it had taken a suo motu cognisance of the matter following media reports and asked Chief Secretary Y Tsering to order a probe by an official not lower than the rank of Secretary and submit a report within 45 days.

As per media reports, five labourers engaged in a road construction work near Manikganj village were electrocuted and another five seriously injured on 25thJuly when their vehicle touched a high tension power line that was lying low.
