Shillong: In a matter of great pride for the Northeast Indian region, the state of Meghalaya has emerged as the second-best government small state in the country, as per a report by the Public Affairs Centre, which engages in action research focussing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the context of India. The "land of clouds" has been placed behind only Goa in a list tabulated by the PAC.

"Happy to share that #Meghalaya has been ranked the 2nd Best Governed State in #India in the Small States Category based on the Public Affairs Index 2020 of PAC India, an annual ranking of the states of India on governance performance," Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated in a tweet, expressing his happiness. Meghalaya has earned 0.797 PAI Index points to clinch the second spot in the list.

According to the PAI release, Goa is the best governed small state in India. The other Northeast Indian states of Sikkim (number 4), Tripura (number 5), Arunachal Pradesh (number 6), Mizoram (number 7), Nagaland (number 8), and Manipur (number 11) have also been featured in the list.

Four southern states, Kerala (1.388 PAI Index point), Tamil Nadu (0.912), Andhra Pradesh (0.531) and Karnataka (0.468) stood in the first four ranks in the ‘Large States’ category in terms of governance, the PAC report said.

Former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K Kasturirangan, who heads the PAC, said the States were ranked on governance performance based on a composite index in the context of sustainable development.
