Meghalaya Administration Issues 'Warning' Amid Heavy Rainfall in State

Shillong, July 10, 2019:

The Meghalaya Government has warned that heavy rains are headed to the Northeast Indian country in the coming few days.

In a statement, the Government of Meghalaya has stated that as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy is likely to occur at isolated places in the state on the 11th and 12th July, 2019 and heavy to heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls likely to occur on the 10th and 13th of July, 2019.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner & CEO, DDMA East Khasi Hills District has issued advisory for the information of the public. People are advised to take extra care during heavy rainfall as there is likelihood of flash floods, especially in areas near the rivers and streams and they are not to go near the water or walk through moving water and stay away from streams, drains, culverts, etc.

The people of Meghalaya have also been advised not to drive through flooded areas and to stay away from electric poles, or power lines and to avoid electrocution. Moreover, students have been advised not to cross rivers and streams during heavy rain and tourists visiting the tourist spots should not venture into streams, rivers, and waterfalls.

Meanwhile, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has informed that 145 villages are underwater and 3,435 hectares of crop areas have been affected so far because of the flood.
