The state of Meghalaya bid a teary eyed farewell to veteran politician and Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy, who had passed away on Sunday at the age of 65.
The government accorded a state funeral to the late leader from 12 noon to 1.30 pm at Mawpun. He will be laid to rest at his native village in Shella. Thousands of grief-stricken Meghalayans, including prominent politicians, paid their last respects to the veteran.
Earlier, in the morning, there was a church service at Roy's residence in Sohra.
The state government has already declared a holiday on Wednesday. Right from the morning on Tuesday, leaders cutting across party lines, supporters and people from different walks of life made a beeline to the residence of the late Speaker to bid him adieu.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, several cabinet ministers, family and friends and political leaders escorted his mortal remains till Sohra.
Donkupar Roy was born on November 10, 1954 and was also a former Chief Minister of Meghalaya. He was also the head of the United Democratic Party, a political party recognised in Meghalaya. He passed away after being hospitalized in New Delhi's Medanta hospital for 10 days due to a stomach condition.
